Nancy Hilliard Joyce, a painter in the River Arts District, had always been attracted to the symbolism of the wheel, its connection to motion and the passage of time. So painting bikes felt natural to her. She did it without having a specific reason.
But one day, through an Internet rabbit hole, she discovered a nonprofit that gives bikes to young women in Cambodia, and the meaning of her bike paintings transformed. Lotus Outreach International, a California-based group, taught her that bikes are crucial to mobility and access to education for young women in Southeast Asia.
"Now, the bikes have changed meaning: It's more about the freedom of the bike and the safety of the bike," she said.
